A Sweet Surprise from a Local Classroom

A few weeks ago, a class of local students visited our 3rd Ave store as part of a school project on small businesses in the community. They came with cameras, their observational skills, and a lot of good questions about how Sloat Garden Center got started and what makes it special.

After their visit, the students put together a poster covering everything they learned, complete with photos from their trip, hand-drawn flowers, and their own writing about why they think Sloat matters to the neighborhood. One student wrote that Sloat is “a great start to a garden,” and another explained that it’s one of the only plant stores in the Richmond neighborhood.

They gifted us the poster, and we couldn’t be more touched. It’s now proudly kept in the office at 3rd Ave for the team to enjoy.

Getting kids curious about plants and gardening is something close to our hearts. Whether it’s a class visit, a little one picking out their first seed packet, or a family stroll through the nursery, we love being a place where the next generation of gardeners can get their hands dirty and fall in love with growing things. That’s part of why we started our Kids Club: stop by with your little one and pick up a kids club card, after five stamps they’ll take home a free plant of their own. We also share kid-friendly activities throughout the year, and host our annual Kids Week every July, so there’s always a reason to bring the family in and grow together.

Thank you to the students (and their teacher) for choosing us for their project. Moments like these are a reminder of how much we love being part of our communities. If your class is interested in a visit like this, reach out to your local Sloat directly to see what they can set up.
