The UNUFA Public Domain Literature Library offers 91 works drawn from the Project Gutenberg collection, selected and presented for readers interested in firsthand accounts and documentary sources of modern history. The Catalogue maintenance uses source records and bibliographic context. Every book is accompanied by an editorial note that examines structure, narrative voice, and themes—intended as a reading companion rather than a summary.
Browsing the Catalogue
You may browse by category from the navigation, or access individual records directly through unique URLs. Each book page includes the full title, author, digital source (Project Gutenberg), a set of subject keywords, a target-reader note, and a supplementary catalogue note. The categories serve as starting points: readers interested in the American Civil War, for instance, will find works by Grant, Sherman, Alcott, and others grouped together, while those looking for World War I memoirs can turn to the personal testimony shelf.
Source Attribution and Editing
All texts originate from Project Gutenberg, a trusted source of public-domain literature. The catalogue’s editorial material—background notes, reading guides, and contextual essays—was prepared by the catalogue project, based in the United Kingdom. No changes have been made to the underlying texts; the catalogue provides guidance for approaching them.
The Four Categories
The first category, World Events in Context: Revolutions; Modern Nations; Social History; and World Events. The second, Biography & Personal Testimony — Reader’s Shelf, collects individual narratives of war, captivity, and revolution. Together they illustrate how public events are experienced and recorded by participants and observers.
Three Reading Paths
- Civil War from the Top: Begin with Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant — Volume 1 for a commander’s view, then contrast with Memoirs of General William T. Sherman — Volume 1. Add Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott for a frontline nursing perspective.
- World War I Diaries: Start with Gallipoli Diary, Volume 1 by General Ian Hamilton, then 1914 by Field-Marshal French, and finally In Mesopotamia by Maurice Nicoll for a medical officer’s account.
- Personal Testimony Across Eras: Read Yashka by Maria Bochkareva (Russian Revolution), Three Times and Out by Mervin Simmons (WWI escape), and Blood Brothers: A Medic's Sketch Book (WWII Pacific).
Practical Notes
Each catalogue note offers between 300 and 500 words of careful reading context. UNUFA Catalogue not read every book in full; notes are based on excerpts and structural analysis. Readers are encouraged to explore the works independently. For corrections or reports, use the contact page.
Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements
The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.
When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.
Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
